A Doomsday Clock?

A Doomsday Clock?

Revelation 22:20 – “He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!”

Apparently I have been living under a rock because this week was the first time that I have heard of the infamous doomsday clock. This clock came about in the late 1940s as a way of alerting humanity to the “fact” that we were quickly on our way to destroying the world. The closer the clock gets to midnight the more danger we are supposedly in.
The clock was set at 2 minutes to midnight at the height of the nuclear war scare and then once disarmament began it ticked back to 17 minutes til midnight. Recently however the group of scientist that “set” the clock have been moving it up very quickly. The clock ticked to 6 minutes to midnight in 2012 and then just this year on January 10, the clock moved to 5 minutes til midnight. The reason was the possibility of wide scale war, the fact that many nations are now armed with nuclear weapons, the threat of terrorism, and not only that but the possibility of lab generated “super viruses”.
So is it really 11:55? Is humanity close to destroying the world that we live in? I would answer a resounding no. I don’t say this because the fear of war and terrorism and super viruses is not real. I think these threats are very real, and I affirm that we are close to the end of the world (actually to the creation of a new heaven and a new earth), but I do not believe that humanity has the ability to destroy the world.
Oh sure the ability may be there. Growing up in the 1980s we were told at school in our social studies classes that Russia and the USA had the ability to destroy the world through nuclear destruction many times over. However the destruction that we feared so much never materialized. Our world wasn’t even thrown into a Mad Max type of society. Why? Because something kept us from it. That something I believe wasn’t a thing at all but was instead the Sovereign hand of Almighty God. Biblically we are told that He is in control. Paul says in Colossians 1:17, “Jesus is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” In other words Jesus is holding everything together, and He is 100% in control.
We may try to delude ourselves into believing that we are in control of our lives and of the world but in reality, God is in control. The words of the children’s song are true, “He’s got the whole world in His hands.” God is in control, and even though we may have the ability to destroy the world, God is ultimately the one controlling our hands. He is the one who sets up kings and kingdoms. So even though the doomsday clock may say 11:55, midnight doesn’t come until God says it does.
2 Peter 3:10 says, “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.” In other words a day of destruction is coming, but notice its not called the day of man or the day of nuclear war or the day of super viruses, it is called “the day of the Lord.” It will be His day, because He is in control and He will decide when that day will be.
I think it is important to be a good steward of God’s creation. I think it is important to do all we can to promote peace, and certainly we are called Biblically to pray for peace, but I also believe 100% that no matter what the doomsday clock says we as humans will not destroy the world.
That job belongs to God and God alone, He is in sovereign control and He is the only one that decides when it is really 2 minutes til midnight or when the clock strikes midnight. Then at the midnight cry, “we’ll be going home.” So don’t live in fear of doomsday, instead do as John did in Revelation, pray for that day to come, “even so come quickly Lord Jesus.”
