Major Beliefs Day 39 – Salvation the Old Fashioned Way…(Romans 5)
Romans 5: 1- ”Therefore since we have been justified through faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Do you remember the old E.F. Hutton commercial that ended with the iconic tag line ‘”we make money the old fashioned way we earn it.” The last part was very gruffly accentuated by the speaker and it had a way of sticking with you. In fact it is a thought that has been with us and stuck with us since the beginning of creation almost. The thought that if we are going to have good things in an lives we have to earn them.
We earn our grades in school, then when we progress for enough we earn our degree. When we get a job we earn our wages then when we’ve saved up enough money we earn the right to buy a house or take a vacation. Years later when we have worked long enough, have reached a certain age, and again have saved up enough money, we earn the right to retire. We like to earn things (wrote in a gruff accent).
But then we come to the look of Romans and Paul tells us that we can’t earn the greatest thing that we will ever have, and that is salvation. It is the most important thing in the world, and yet we can’t earn it. What? Why not? Why can’t we earn salvation ? Paul, who himself knew a lot about trying to earn it, says that we can’t in short because God is holy and we are sinful. We are born sinners with a sin nature and because of that we cannot earn salvation. In fact we are in a hopeless condition because we can’t save ourselves. God breaks through our hopelessness however and gives us the gift of salvation. We aren’t saved by any works that we do but we are saved only by the work that Jesus did. “It is by grace you’ve been saved so that no one can boast.” Salvation is a gift if it wasn’t us wretched sinners could never be saved. God however offers us the gift of salvation we however must receive it with repentance and faith.
We can only he saved the old fashioned way, through the gift of God the Father, and the work of Jesus Christ. To God be the glory!
