Psalm 19:7-8 -The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes
St. Augustine said over 1600 years ago that Psalm 18 was a psalm that described Jesus Christ. John Chrysostom who lived around the same time said that it is a psalm of divine providence, describing the dealings of God in revealing Himself to man. Others have said it is a psalm that shows the beauty and power of the word of God.
Who is right? All of the above. When I was in elementary school and a multiple choice test was given, if one of the choices was “all of the above”, most likely that choice was correct. That certainly is the case here. Is this a psalm that describes the beauty and power of God’s word? Of course it is. His word is perfect, it revives us, it is right causing usto rejoice, it is pure enlightening our eyes, giving us wisdom, and so much more. It is certainly a psalm about God’s word.
It is also a psalm that describes for us the way God reveals Himself to us. He reveals Himself through His creation, “the heavens declare the glory of God (v.1) and He reveals Himself through His word (v.7-11).
Yet of we stop there we stop woefully short of the message of this psalm for it is a psalm that points to Jesus. How? It points to Him as the Living word of God. John reminds us in John 1:1-2, ”
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.” Jesus is God’s word come in the flesh and because of that He is the only one to fully keep God’s word. And it is through Him that we find enlightenment, wisdom, encouragement, and reasons to rejoice.
Jesus is also seen in creation because God spoke creation into exsistence. God created through His word and as John says “by Him all things are created.” Jesus is the full revelation of God and because of that He is the apex of this psalm. Its all about Him and that is part of the greatest news in the world because it means that we can know God. He is a personal God who has revealed Himself to us, through His creation, through His word, and most fully through His Son Jesus. To God be the glory!
